Reporting to the trauma program manager, the burn / trauma registrar is responsible for managing the trauma data registry (NTRACS) and the burn data registry (burnTRACS). This work involves identification, collection, coding, injury severity scoring and entering patient data into each NTRACS' database. Data collection, coding and maintenance of the registry are required to ensure compliance with both State and ACS guidelines as a trauma center and burn center. This position is also responsible for report generation and interpretation related to clinical outcomes analysis, performance improvement administrative planning and data research requests.

Job Responsibilities


1. Data Entry

  • Organize and enter injury data into the trauma registry database (NTRACS) regarding the patients injury event, its severity, the patients care and outcome
  • Adhere to data management protocols set forth by ACH and regulatory agencies
  • Identifies burn or trauma patients from the admission records on a daily basis

2. Coding and Abstracting

  • Abstract appropriate data elements for all trauma patients, reviewing both concurrently and retrospectively to ensure all necessary elements are captured.
  • Monitor abstract sheets for compliance with trauma ICD-9 / ICD-10 codes; question outliers
  • Establish the injury severity score using AIS methodology
  • Perform on-going quality assurance and data validation assessments to ensure accuracy of the data and to meet regulatory compliance and accrediting standards

3. Registry Management

  • Assists with quality improvement or research projects / studies as required
  • Generates reports to provide data and statistical information to burn, trauma and injury prevention directors and to appropriate others serving as a conduit to monitor ACH's trauma trends, supplying benchmarking data, and identifying injury trends by age, geographic location, and cause of injury
  • Submit data to the national database at required intervals
  • Participates in state trauma database users groups meetings and periodic training; participates in burn registry education
  • Issues passwords only as necessary and appropriate
  • Generates data to evaluate outcomes for specific trauma entities used to evaluate timeliness, appropriateness, and quality of patient care

Job Requirements


  • Required - Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college program or technical school or nursing diploma - Field of Study: Health Information Management or equivalent



  • Required - 1 years total experience required, which includes 1 year of in trauma registry, burn registry or medical coding and abstracting experience
  • Preferred - working with a trauma or burn database experience preferred



  • Required - Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) (Certification)or Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) (Certification)or Trauma Registrar (CSTR) (Certification)or Certified Professional Coders - Hospital (CPC-H) (Certification) (needed within 1 years of hire date)



  • Required - Post secondary courses in human anatomy, physiology, or other similar discipline preferred.
  • Required - Working knowledge of basic PC skills in windows environment
  • Required - Ability to maintain confidentiality is mandatory with strict adherence to HIPPA regulations
  • Required - Must posses ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Preferred - Previous experience with a trauma or burn database
  • Preferred - Previous completion of an AIS coding course
  • Preferred - Previous completion of a trauma registrar course
  • Preferred - Posses demonstrated communication skills and able to work with others in a team approach
