The Trauma Registrar maintains the Trauma Registry by capturing accurate and complete information on all patients entered into the Trauma Registry and assists in trending aggregate data to evaluate Trauma Program performance.
Work situations are highly varied, as organization priorities shift, and require a detailed-oriented person with technical expertise in the use of computers and PC software, strong interpersonal and organization skills, decision making, and discretion and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive organizational and patient information. Independent thinking, judgment, and decision-making skills are required within the scope of the position responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of, or ability to learn medical terminology pertaining to anatomy, physiology, and injury for trauma patients.
Knowledge of the records and coding conventions relating to the health care field.
Knowledge of CHI-FHS and MHS guidelines and procedures applicable to the duties of this position.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn Abbreviated Injury Scores (AIS) and Injury Severity Scores (ISS).
Ability to use clinical judgment to analyze and interpret all available patient data to determine appropriate coding classifications.
Ability to read, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
Ability to use office equipment and automated systems/applications/software at an acceptable level.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by the duties of the position.
Proficiency in computer entry and extraction. Experience with Microsoft Office, Excel, Word and Epic EHR.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma (or GED equivalent) required
One year of experience working in an acute care hospital setting that demonstrates attainment of requisite job knowledge/skills/abilities required
Completion of a recognized course of study from a certified or accredited organization for: Trauma Registrar, Medical Assistant, or HIM Coder preferred.
Registered Health Information Technologist) RHIT or RHIT eligible or CSTR/ CAISS Preferred
