In a surprising reversal, University of Chicago Medicine has announced that it will build a new adult Level I trauma center at its main Hyde Park campus. In September, UC unveiled a plan to develop a trauma center at Holy Cross Hospital in partnership with Sinai Health System. UC Medicine now intends to build the trauma program alone, without support from Sinai.
According to UC, the new trauma center plan features:
- A Level I adult trauma center at University of Chicago Medicine that will complement the existing Level I pediatric trauma program and the Burn and Complex Wound Center.
- A new and expanded emergency room in close proximity to the Center for Care and Discovery.
- A substantial increase in the number of inpatient beds, which will greatly expand UC’s ability to meet the needs of the community in trauma and emergency care.
