Trauma admissions in a large Canadian healthcare region increased with rising gross domestic product, according to a recent paper in the American Journal of Surgery. The increase amounted to approximately 1 extra trauma admission per 100,000 population for every $3,000 increase in GDP. Trauma death rates, however, did not increase with economic activity. A recent study at San Francisco General Hospital, a Level I trauma center, showed that a short social worker intervention can prevent functional decline in patients with mild traumatic brain injury. The recently created Arkansas Trauma Communication Center has streamlined the transfer process for injured patients, according to a study authored by the trauma registry manager at the Arkansas Health Department.
