Indiana University Health donates 1,500 tourniquets to state troopers

Indiana University Health recently donated 1,500 tourniquets to the Indiana State Police. The donation was made during the annual IU Health Orthopedic Trauma Symposium, which took place November 7 in Indianapolis. IU Health Methodist Hospital is the state’s largest Level I trauma center.

Col. Mark French (pictured above) accepted the donation on behalf of the state police and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The IU Health Orthopedic Trauma Symposium featured presentations and Q&A sessions on trauma care topics ranging from car and motorcycle crashes to farming accidents and violence, according to a press release. The conference also featured a keynote address from Johns Hopkins associate professor of orthopedic surgery Greg Osgood, MD, titled “Lessons Learned from the Battlefield Translated to Urban Trauma Centers.”

“Our goal with this event is to bring some of the field’s leading experts together with other medical professionals to shed light on emerging developments and to share best practices for saving lives in the critical moments following a traumatic injury,” said Anthony Sorkin, MD, system medical director for IU Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and an orthopedic trauma surgeon at IU Health Methodist Hospital.
