By Trauma News on March 2, 2016 Research

The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma has announced the launch of its new open access journal, Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Open. The new peer-reviewed online journal will provide an international multidisciplinary forum for global issues in trauma and acute care surgery.

Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Open will debut in May 2016. According to an AAST press release, articles will include clinical studies, training and implementation reports, survey-based research, case reports and reviews. Topics of special interest will include injury prevention, public health, global and military systems development, disaster and mass casualty management, and the use of new technologies as they relate to trauma education and treatment.

Timothy C. Fabian, MD, FACS

Timothy Fabian, MD, FACS, will serve as the journal’s first editor-in-chief. Dr. Fabian is the former chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He also served on the Committee of Trauma at the American College of Surgeons and is an active member on the editorial boards of the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, Annals of Surgery and Injury.

“I am very proud to lead the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma’s new open-access surgical journal,” Dr. Fabian said. “Open-access publication is the future of academic medical research. It provides two tremendous avenues for promulgation of knowledge that have not been available via traditional subscription print journals. First, it allows for rapid publication within a few weeks of manuscript acceptance. Second, an open-access online publication provides far broader access to the literature than has ever been available—the material is accessible to the world!

According to Dr. Fabian, the editorial board of Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Open includes international leaders in the field of trauma and acute care surgery. The journal’s associate editors are:

  • Karen Brasel, MD, MPH, Oregon Health & Science University
  • Raul Coimbra, MD, PhD, University of California San Diego
  • Martin Croce, MD, The University of Tennessee Health Science CenterUSA
  • Christine Gaarder, MD, PhD, Oslo University Hospital
  • Rao Ivatury, MD, Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Yasuhiro Otomo, MD, PhD, Tokyo Medical and Dental University

“Peer review for the journal will be as strenuous as that established by the field,” Dr. Fabian said. “The AAST plans to publish high quality research in Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Open, and for it to be one of the leading surgical publications.”
