The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) has announced that Shayna Stevens, BSN, RN, TCRN, is the recipient of 2022 Distinguished TCRN Award.
Shayna is a member of the trauma team at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano in Plano, Texas. At Texas Health, she is active in staff education and represents the trauma department on hospital and ED shared governance councils.
“Shayna helped develop and refine the introduction to trauma care and trauma care advanced classes we offer to ED staff,” said Katherine Wright, who nominated Shayna for the TCRN award. “She also does just in time education before, during and after trauma activations.”
Shayna is one of nearly 7,000 nurses who have earned the Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) certification, trauma nursing’s highest professional credential.
“I have practiced in many different settings and roles throughout my nursing career, yet I had never felt compelled to earn a certification in nursing,” Shayna said. “Once I became a trauma clinician, I realized I had found the role I had been searching for. My new position brought passion for nursing back into my career. Winning this award only reinforces the commitment I made to become the best trauma nurse I could.”
Nurses who earn the TCRN must demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge and expertise across the continuum of trauma care from injury prevention to acute care to rehabilitation. According to Stevens, earning TCRN certification made her feel more prepared and more knowledgeable about all aspects of trauma care.
“I wanted to be able to provide exceptional trauma patient care, answer questions from the patient and family, and help other healthcare professionals who care for trauma patients provide outstanding care,” she said. “This certification increased my confidence in caring for trauma patients.”
