Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, has lost its state designation as a Level II trauma center because of inadequate anesthesiology coverage. The status change came on September 24 when the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) informed hospital administration of the downgrade, according to a report in the Daily Herald.
Update: The IDPH restored Sherman Hospital’s status as a Level II trauma center on October 15, according to the Daily Herald.
Negotiations between the hospital and its contracted anesthesiology provider group ended in August without a new agreement, according to the Daily Herald article. The suburban Chicago hospital went on bypass several times in September.
Illinois law requires Level II trauma centers to have anesthesiology staff on call to arrive at the hospital within 30 minutes after notification.
