By Trauma News on June 3, 2026 Trauma Quality

June 2026 is Performance Improvement Month at Trauma System News, and we kicked it off on June 2 with a Trauma Learning Break featuring two experts on trauma quality and PI.

In the first half of this session, Wendy Erickson of KJ Trauma Consulting presented “Optimizing Trauma Registry Data for Trauma PI”. During this 30-minute sponsored workshop, Wendy:

  • Explains methods for establishing a baseline of strong trauma data quality
  • Shows how to apply structured methods for ensuring accurate identification of root causes, not just symptoms
  • Describes how to implement continuous monitoring and feedback loops, promoting a culture of data integrity and transparency
  • Identifies methods for utilizing the trauma registry to support all aspects of PI and event resolution

Then, during our second half, trauma PI expert Kathleen Martin answered attendees’ questions on trauma quality and patient safety. Kathleen shares her thoughts and guidance on:

  • Demonstrating effective PI to trauma surveyors
  • When to review PI issues in aggregate
  • How in-depth your tertiary review minutes should be
  • Demonstrating loop closure for rare events
  • Plus top tips for TPMs and new PI nurses
