Can geographic information system (GIS) technology help determine the fastest and most cost-effective transport method for patients with traumatic injuries? Researchers at the University of Cincinnati and the Maryland Shock Trauma Center recently analyzed a decade of trauma air transports in five Maryland counties. The researchers used GIS technology to estimate air versus ambulance transport times. According to the study, “31 percent of the trauma cases transported by air could have also been transported by ambulance within the ‘golden hour’ of trauma treatment.” Full Story
