Members of the ACS Committee on Trauma will host a legislative briefing on the Stop the Bleed initiative this week in Washington, D.C. The public session will introduce lawmakers and legislative staffers to the initiative, and it will also include a bleeding control simulation.
Invited speakers include Rep. Michael Burgess, MD (R-TX), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, and Rep. Gene Green (D-TX), the subcommittee’s Ranking Member. Remarks will also be provided by Rep. Bill Flores (R-TX) and Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC).
ACS speakers will include Michael Coburn, MD, FACS, of the Committee on Trauma Advocacy. Ronald Stewart, MD, FACS, and Leonard Weireter, MD, FACS, will speak about bleeding control and The Hartford Consensus.
The goal of The Hartford Consensus initiative is to improve survival following mass shootings and other intentional acts of mass violence. A main objective of this effort has been to empower civilians to take life-saving action when the need arises, regardless of the situation or cause of the significant bleeding.
