The Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Specialist will collaborate with the Trauma Program Director and Trauma Medical Director in the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of clinical care provided to the trauma patient population as set by the guidelines formulated by the American College of Surgeons and Texas Department of State Health Service.  Provide in-depth knowledge of trauma care and procedures to drive systematic evaluation of trauma clinical care with an emphasis on patient safety and improving trauma care. Review and analyze issues, identify opportunities for improvement, recommend corrective actions, and provide ongoing monitoring.  Utilize a standardized approach in evaluating the care delivery processes with an emphasis on decreasing variation and improving outcomes.

 

Efficiently and timely provide concurrent abstraction and review of medical records for deviation in the standard of care.  Performs internal and external (TQIP and Texas TQIP) data analysis. Generates reports required for trauma meetings and as requested by the Trauma Program Director or Trauma Medical Director.  Maintains integrity of data and oversees the data collection process to ensure data integrity.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Monitor, maintain and enhance the quality of care delivered to trauma patients through the Trauma Program Improvement Process.
  • Utilizing the Trauma Registry to provide a threshold for monitoring the success and evaluation of the processes.
  • Coordinate the investigation, analysis and responses to quality/patient safety issues, events, significant care issues or trends.
  • Ensure trended analysis is performed and appropriate responses to unfavorable trends are developed and implemented.
  • Work effectively with the medical staff to facilitate development and implementation of practice guidelines, determine appropriate practice indicators in all clinical areas and produce effective outcomes.
  • Assists in data entry into the Trauma Registry during high volume times.
  • Ensure design and improvement plans are in full compliance with the American College of Surgeons, Texas Department of State Health Services, Joint Commission and Federal Standards.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing required.
  • Minimum of three to five years of trauma related clinical experience in trauma and / or critical care nursing is required.
  • One to two years of patient safety/risk management experience is required.
  • Working knowledge of the American College of Surgeons and the Texas Department of State Health Service criteria for trauma designation.
  • Knowledge of trauma registries and coding is preferred.
  • Current Trauma Nurse Core Course certification or obtain within first year of hire.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS

Required:

  • RN license in the state of Texas.
  • Specialty certification in trauma.
